Mission & Outreach

The members of Christ United Methodist Church put their faith into action by responding to those in need in New Jersey and around the world.

Locally, our church serves as a host site for the FISH Hospitality Program (FHP), which provides shelter, meals and other assistance to homeless women and families in order to give them a new opportunity to live independently in their communities. We host FHP guests several times a year.

We also support Fish, Inc., which is related to but separate from FHP. We collect food for Fish, Inc. http://www.christumcpiscataway.com/MissionOutreach_clip_image002.jpgthroughout the year, and annually in December we collect socks, mittens, hats and scarves for Fish participants.

The Epiphany Food Outreach Ministry is an ongoing ministry where our church prepares and serves a meal on the first Saturday of each month at our sister church in Orange. On average, about 50 people are served each month.

We believe that we are all called to heed the command of Jesus in John 21:17 to "feed my sheep." In response, we’ve launched The Shepherd's Shelves food ministry with an initial purpose of increasing the amount of food donations that are given within our church. This ministry works in cooperation with other food ministries in the region.

Other hunger-related ministries that we support financially include Elijah’s Promise in New Brunswick and CUMAC/ECHO in Paterson. We participate in the annual CROP Walk and also raise money for hunger-related ministries through activities such as “Souper” Bowl Sunday and Coins for Missions.

Through our annual Pumpkin Patch, the church sells pumpkins and http://www.christumcpiscataway.com/MissionOutreach_clip_image004.jpggourds on its front lawn during the weeks leading up to Halloween. Proceeds from this effort, which is well supported by the community, are used to support multiple mission projects.

We are a strong supporter of Angel Tree, a program of Prison Fellowship. Angel Tree offers us an opportunity to share Christ's love by helping to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the families of prisoners. We have supported this program during both the Christmas and Easter seasons.

We have raised money for a Greater Plainfield Habitat for Humanity home, and a team of abitatvolunteers from our church spent a day helping prepare the home’s foundation.

We support the Church World Service Blankets+ Program through a Blanket Sunday appeal.

Twice in recent years, our church has sponsored missions to Uganda. Our teams have http://www.christumcpiscataway.com/MissionOutreach_clip_image006.jpgbuilt a home and a classroom at a Watoto Children’s Village outside Kampala. At these villages supported by the Watoto Church, parentless children are provided spiritual, physical, educational and emotional care so that they will become responsible Christians and productive citizens of Uganda.

Our members generously support special United Methodist offerings that are nationwide and global in scope: Human Relations Day, Peace with Justice Sunday, One Great Hour of Sharing, World Communion Sunday, Methodist Student Day and Native American Ministry Sunday.
